The "Almond Mountain" is the highest peak in the northern part of the Hijaz range. It rises to 2,580 meters above sea level and it snows in winter. Its massif is a great destination for hiking, but be sure to be accompanied by a guide. You will be rewarded with splendid views that can stretch to the Red Sea as soon as you get to the top. The mountain is considered by some biblical exegetes to be the site of Mount Sinai, where Moses met God. This identification, however, is subject to considerable controversy. Jabal al-Lawz is part of the Vision 2030 development plan and the somewhat crazy Neom project. The site has been identified as a ski resort, named "Trojena" after the city of Troy and its famous horse. The pressure has gone up a notch with the awarding of the Asian Winter Games in 2028. Work is underway to build hotels, restaurants, and concrete ski slopes that will be sprayed with artificial snow. Intended as a year-round leisure destination, Trojena also includes a large wellness resort, the construction of a huge reservoir with promenades and stages to host festivals. Due to the ongoing construction, access to Jabal al-LAwz is restricted or even prohibited. Be sure to check it out if you intend to hike in its vicinity.
