Situated on a natural rocky promontory along the Kings' Highway, the small town of Kerak continues to attract an increasing number of tourists each year. The reason for the popularity of Kerak is the legendary Crusader fortress on the foothills of the hill. It was part of the chain of Crusader castles that formed a fortified line between Aqaba and Turkey, erected to secure the pilgrimage routes to Jerusalem. Kerak is well worth a stop on the way to Petra. In addition to visiting the fortress, don't miss a stroll through the town. Its village atmosphere, its lively streets and its many shops give the profile of a typical small town in central Jordan. However, if you are a single woman, don't go. The city has not developed as much as Madaba. Life is very rural despite the size of the city and the men can be very oppressive. You will quickly feel uncomfortable and even unsafe if you get lost in the city, which is quite large. We also advise you not to sleep here, as the hotels are dirty or far too expensive.
