Covering nearly 300 km2, Dana is the largest park in Jordan. Nature lovers will not be able to miss this natural reserve, a superb stopover between Kerak and Petra. You can go hiking in its canyons to discover a rich and varied flora and fauna. Dana is a great opportunity to vary the pleasures between two visits of archaeological sites. A total of 700 plant species (pines, oaks, junipers, cypresses) and 449 animal species have been recorded. Dana is located at an important migratory crossroads of animal species and one can encounter animals from Europe, Africa or Asia that have acclimatized to the desert. With a bit of luck you will see reptiles, gazelles and hyenas or rarer animals like the sand cat, the Syrian wolf or the falcon. In addition to the wildlife, it is especially the hiking trails through the fantastic landscapes that attract visitors, especially the French.Near Shobak, on the Kings' Road, the charming stone village of Dana overlooks the wide fault line, forming a gash in the plateau. Don't miss the panoramic view as you arrive from Kerak, which is just before the junction with the Al-Husainya road and the gas station. The settlement of the village, near five springs, dates back to the 15th century. For a long time, the inhabitants lived there in complete freedom and in a self-sufficient manner, given the abundance of crops. Progressively abandoned from the 1970s, the village lost its importance and most of the houses fell into ruin. It was saved thanks to an ambitious and exemplary restoration program undertaken by the RSCN, the Jordanian Society for Nature Conservation. The site, with its extraordinary location on a rocky spur overlooking the valley, deserved this effort. Through tourism, life has resumed: new occupants, but also old ones, have come to find their rehabilitated dwelling. A natural biosphere was created in 1989, which allows to combine sports tourism with the discovery of the surrounding nature in a particularly preserved environment. Thanks to this sustainable development plan, the inhabitants are directly involved in the management and success of the reserve. They manage the tourist infrastructures, revive the craft industry and contribute to the protection of the environment. The goal is simple: to preserve this beautiful natural setting while offering the population the means to live from it. By visiting Dana, you will have a wonderful time while contributing to the success of this project.
