Saint-Vaast-la-Hougue, the main port on the east coast of the Cotentin peninsula, has a long, eventful history stretching back more than a thousand years. First disputed by the Vikings, then landed by the English in 1346, and located in the immediate vicinity of the Battle of La Hougue in 1692, it was at this date that two fortified towers were erected to protect the town and the French coastline. Today, the tower on the island of Tatihou is the town's emblem. A port town, Saint-Vaast is also a major fishing and yachting center. The construction of a dock in 1982 has helped to develop the latter activity.
