Its origins date back to the 7th century, when barbarian invasions and frequent landslides drove the population of the coastal village inland. With the arrival of a community of Benedictine monks, Taggia became a cultural and religious center until the 17th century. Its urban fabric,16th-century ramparts, long arcaded roadway and civil and religious monuments make it one of the most interesting historical centers on the Riviera. Along Via Dalmazzo and Via Soleri, numerous medieval and Renaissance palaces line up with carved portals, pediments and elaborate porches.Taggia is also famous for its small black olives, known as taggiasche, which are still grown in the monastic tradition. After centuries of abandonment, life has returned to the coast. Arma is administratively linked to the municipality of Taggia, and its beach is one of the most pleasant on the western Ligurian coast.
