A visit to Dolceacqua will take you back to medieval times in a village setting that has remained unchanged for seven centuries. This picturesque village, which develops on both banks of the Nervia, is one of the most beautiful in Italy. A spectacular fourteenth-century donkey bridge links the more modern district of Terra with the ancient Borgo. Claude Monet, who was very impressed by this bridge, which he said was "a jewel of lightness", painted it in 1884 during his visit to the area. Here, houses and buildings were built in concentric circles up to the Doria castle (12th century), at the very top. A labyrinth of caruggi leads to this imposing military structure, later used as a lordly residence. Further down, the church of Sant'Antonio Abate has a beautiful baroque façade, while in the church square, the monument to the Frantoio (olive press) stands in memory of Pier Vincenzo Mela, inventor of the olive pressing process in the 18th century.Dolceacqua is famous for its red wine, a fragrant and intense nectar, the Rossese DOC, excellent with meat and cheese.
