Saorge is classified as a monumental village and offers a perfect example of urbanization in the Middle Ages. It has cobbled staircases, 15th century houses with remarkable doors and lintels, while the roofs are covered with red or green slate tiles from the Roya. The history of this township located on the Salt Road was closely associated with that of the County of Nice. It changed sovereignty several times: Sardinian until 1794, it was conquered by Masséna in 1794 who demolished its walls. In 1814, it was once again Sardinian, until its definitive attachment to France in 1860.
