Just 9 km east of Sanremo (on the SS1 along the coast or the SS1bis inland), on the ruins of an abandoned medieval village, stands the resurrected village of Bussana Vecchia. In 1887, a violent earthquake toppled what had withstood centuries of hardship. The abandoned village was brought back to life in the 1960s by a community of artists from all over the world, who restored it and set up stores and studios. Today, the place is a real experiment in artistic and cultural initiatives. At a distance of 3 km from Bussana Vecchia, on the seafront, a new urban center was built at the end of the 19th century after the earthquake. A sanctuary dedicated to the Sacred Heart (1889-1901) was built with a particular profusion of decoration. And let's not forget that it was in the new Bussana that the ice-cream cone was born! In 1910, Giovanni Torre came up with this ingenious recipe that allowed walkers to enjoy their ice cream with one hand free. A small museum commemorates the invention at Bar Gelateria Gildo, in the village's main square.
