The city was born in 1923 from the will of Mussolini to bring together administratively 11 municipalities, the largest of which were Oneglia and Porto Maurizio. Porto Maurizio, historically close to Genoa, has a tourist vocation. The centre, cut into concentric ellipses and clinging to the hill, has been preserved practically intact. The buildings are arranged in rows on two lines. The buildings are arranged in rows along two routes, and include palaces from the 17th and 18th centuries with austere facades and sumptuous interiors. Oneglia, on the other hand, cannot deny its Piedmontese origins with its straight arcaded streets. The two original towns have never managed to merge into the new entity. The architecture of the central districts dates back to the 19th century and the origins of the city's economic development, famous for its oil and pasta factories. The port of Imperia is the main port of call at the tip of western Liguria.
