Until the early 20th century, the town of Kilauea, with a population of just over 2,000, was at the heart of a sugar plantation region. The end of this prosperous era, however, did not rush it into the tourist business. Kilauea has remained very rural and it is mainly organic farms that have developed in recent years. Surfers, hippies and rare birds have also found refuge here. There are many beaches along the coast, the best of which are around Kalihiwai, on Kalihiwai Road. In the winter, big waves are formed and are a joy for the most experienced surfers, while beginners will prefer the summer.
