Hilo, with its 45,000 inhabitants, is, with Kailua-Kona, the second largest city on the island of Hawai'i. But everything opposes them! Kailua-Kona is sunny and ultra touristy while Hilo is very rainy (one of the wettest cities in the United States!) and less touristy. It's no coincidence that most native Hawaiians live in and around Hilo; it's the very heart of the island's "Aloha Spirit." While the strong winds don't make its beaches a beach destination, Hilo's surroundings are lush and scenic. It is also the closest city to Volcanoes National Park or Mauna Kea
