This small town of about 2,000 inhabitants was once one of the driving forces of the region's sugar industry, until the closure of its last factory in the 1990s. But the city has not fallen into ruins... Now antique shops, art galleries and second-hand clothing shops have taken over. Honokaa has even become, over time, the second largest hippie refuge on the island of Hawai'i, after Pahoa. Despite these changes, Honokaaa has kept its old-fashioned charm, as evidenced by the 1920s facades of the shops on its main street. A stop in Honokaaa, for a short walk or shopping, is therefore a very pleasant moment on the Hamakua coast.
