Haleakala, Hawaiian for "house of the sun", is a dormant volcano that occupies two-thirds of Maui. It is a superb volcano with sublime lunar and colorful landscapes whose beauty will take your breath away. This exceptional landform is one of the must-see sites of Maui and the Hawaiian archipelago in general. From its base to its 3,055 m summit, the climate is very changeable: from a tropical heat to a polar cold! From Kahului, it takes 2 hours to cover the 38 miles (about 61 km) that lead to the crater, but from Kaanapali, it takes 3 hours to drive. In any case it is better to get up early.
