Polipoli State Park is a beautiful natural park at an altitude of 2,000 meters on the western slopes of Haleakala. Its verdant redwood and eucalyptus forest is the green lung of the region. Sometimes closed during drought to prevent fires, it can also be slippery and muddy during heavy rains. It is one of the best spots on the island for camping (online reservation on the DNR website) and for superb hiking and biking. Note that the place is shared with hunters who come to hunt wild pigs and pheasants in season, so don't hesitate to make noise and wear colorful clothes
