With about 1500 inhabitants, Kaunakakakai is the largest city in Molokai. It is the only truly lively place on the island. There are restaurants, supermarkets, banks and tourist agencies. The city centre is organised around Ala Malama Street, where shops and restaurants line up; their wooden fronts look very western. Time here seems to have stopped. No traffic lights, no traffic jams, a city that is not a traffic jam... It is its inhabitants who make up its soul; you have to stroll around and take the time to talk. Older people can spend hours telling you the fascinating story of their island on the terrace of a café!
