In 1798, King Kamehameha III chose to establish Lahaina as the capital of the newly unified archipelago kingdom. Lahaina remained the capital of Hawaii until 1845, when Honolulu stole its title. In the first half of the 19th century, the European sailors who came to hunt humpback whales in the waters of Maui, who were very fond of alcohol and women, created an atmosphere of debauchery in the city that the Protestant missionaries - who landed almost at the same time - did not cease to fight. It was then the sugar industry that allowed Lahaina to develop, followed by tourism in the 20th century.
