This small village of barely 50 inhabitants, surrounded by sugarcane fields, emptied itself at the time of the decline of the sugar industry in the 20th century. Although the sugar industry has almost disappeared in Hawaii today, it was for a long time the main engine of its economy. Today, the city is visited mainly for its museum, the Alexander & Baldwin Sugar Museum, named after the sugar company that was part of the "Big Five". It was indeed one of the five companies that had a monopoly on the exploitation of sugar on the island. The visit is enriching and allows to better understand the agricultural process and its impact on the Hawaiian culture.
