After having been for a long time at the heart of the sandalwood trade, Waialua developed an important sugar industry in the 19th century. Unfortunately, since the disappearance of this industry in 1996, the town has not been able to convert to other agricultural productions and is now only a residential town of about 4,000 inhabitants. If you continue to the western tip, the shops in the small downtown area of Waialua are the last ones where you can do some shopping. If you were a fan of the series Lost , you should know that the beach where the plane crashes in the series is Mokuleia Beach Park, not far from Waialua.
