Waipahu is a quiet little town in the Central Plateau countryside, between the Waianae Mountains to the west and the Koolau Mountains to the east. If you're based in Waikiki, it's possible to visit its sites in half a day, as they're all within a 45-minute drive (avoiding rush hour, of course: leave after 9am and return no later than 4pm). Formerly a sugarcane plantation, it was famous among ancient Hawaiians for its fresh water springs, hence its name: 'wai' meaning 'water'. Several historical and natural sites make it a pleasant stop on the way to the North Shore or the West Coast.
