Established in 1820, this city, nicknamed "Queen of Bayou Lafourche", is located in a landscape of swamps and sugar cane plantations. It is the county seat of Lafourche Parish, which takes its name from the bayou that connects the Mississippi River to the Gulf of Mexico over a length of approximately 170 km. The city developed with the commercialization of sugar cane, cotton and Spanish moss. Today, it still lives on sugar cane. There is a university, Nicholls State University, and the French heritage is very present. Thibodaux is a gateway to and from Cajun country and is as endearing as its people.
