The community of less than 6,000 people was named after George Schriever, a railroad agent, in connection with the opening of the section connecting it to Houma in the 1870s. Schriever is less than 10 miles northwest of Houma on the scenic Little Bayou Black Drive (La-311, much more pleasant than Route 24), and is also served by the Amtrak Sunset Limited train (this route connects New Orleans to Los Angeles in two days). Ardoyne Plantation is likely to be the only point of interest in Schriever, but the fact that it is unique is worth the trip.
