The city was named after Charles Morgan, a Northern financier who was responsible for its prosperity after the Civil War. It was he who built the terminus of the New Orleans and Great Western Railroad. Morgan City is located at the confluence of the Atchafalaya, the Teche and the Intracoastal Waterway and consequently developed an important fishing industry on Lake Palourde and the surrounding swamps and bayous. There are few points of interest in this industrial city which lives from offshore oil exploitation and fishing. You should not miss the Louisiana Shrimp & Petroleum Festival held in September.
