The city owes its name to its Catholic church dedicated to the cult of Saint Martin of Tours. Originally named Atakapas Post (Poste des Atakapas), the tribe of Atakapas occupying the territory, it is only at the beginning of the 19th century that it will take its current name, after the Louisiana Purchase. The Acadians found a new home here after the Great Upheaval and there are many attractions that highlight this page of history. The Evangeline Oak Tree is a reminder of the importance of Acadian culture in St. Martinville, as is the Acadian Memorial & Cultural Center Museums and the Longfellow-Evangeline State Historic Site.
