Extended to the south by the Ndjolé Mountains, the Cristal Mountains stretch from the Equatorial Guinea border to the Ogooué River. To the south-west of Mikongo, their mist-capped peaks and steep slopes rise to 1,022 m. Covering an area of 120,000 ha, the Monts de Cristal National Park is divided into two distinct parts, each on either side of the Ntoum-Médouneu road axis. The southern part includes the SEEG water reservoirs and the two Kinguélé and Tchimbélé dams. The northern part is wilder. This reserve boasts the greatest diversity of plant species in the whole of Africa. There are an incredible number of species of orchids, begonias and ferns. Mammals such as forest elephants and monkeys can also be seen, as well as numerous species of birds and butterflies. Apart from occasional tours offered by national park guides, there are no well-marked footpaths. However, from the main road, the misty landscape around the mountains gives the unusual impression of being lost between clouds and sky. To reach the park by car, take the N1, then the Médouneu road. Permission to enter and stay in the park must be obtained from the park management. You can stay at the Medzime Assock lodge, which has three-bedroom villas, a restaurant and recreational areas.
