This city at the gates of Guipúzcoa was, from the 13th century, an important commercial and spiritual centre. Emblematic of the city, its church, dedicated to San Saturnino de Tolosa, has an interesting chapel and an admirable altarpiece. Next to it is the sixteenth century Casa de los Gizones, whose name is a reference to the two statues of warriors that guard its entrance. Zalduondo also has several churches and hermitages scattered throughout different areas of the municipality: the Santo Espíritu hermitage is located in the San Adrián cave, and those of San Julián and Santa Basilisa are near Aistra.
