The small town of Wœrth is certainly more famous for the battle of August 6, 1870, which still attracts many passionate pilgrims, than for its medieval past, which is nevertheless very much in evidence thanks to its castle, among other things. Built in the early 14th century by Wernher de Bolanden, Provost of St. Victor near Mainz, it was rebuilt in the 16th century by the Deux-Ponts-Bitche family of Lichtenberg. At the rear, you'll see a fine Renaissance façade with a large balcony and a pink sandstone oriel featuring profiles of Count James I and his wife Catherine de Honstein, with the date 1555.
