With a population of around 10,000, the new commune of Mézidon Vallée d'Auge, formerly Mézidon-Canon, is rich in the history and heritage of the 14 historic communes that make it up, such as the Château de Crèvecœur-en-Auge and the Château de Canon. The commune lies on the border between the Pays d'Auge and the Caen plain, bounded by the small river Laizon which runs through the park. On one side are arable fields, on the other grasslands, hedges and hills. For the record, Mézidon comes from Mézodon, meaning "house of Odon", and it was this same Odon who, in the 11th century, made Canon the stronghold of his fortress.
