In the heart of historic royal Hungary, Eisenstadt was gifted in 1622 to the Esterházy family of Hungarian nobility, for their loyalty, by the Austrian Emperor and King of Hungary Ferdinand II of Habsburg. The Esterházys built one of their main residences here, the palace that is today considered one of the country's most beautiful Baroque buildings. Many lovers choose to marry in this romantic city. Eisenstadt, 57 km south of Vienna, is the smallest of Austria's regional capitals, and is now the capital of Burgenland, the easternmost state. The birthplace of the Esterházy princes, Eisenstadt is distinguished by its heritage, its warm, provincial atmosphere, its musical vocation and its vineyards. Situated at the foot of the Leithagebirge, the town enjoys a privileged location. The town's jewel, the Esterházy Palace, occupies the town center. Follow in the footsteps of this influential dynasty. Eisenstadt was also the home of composer Joseph Haydn (1732-1809), who served the Esterházy princes. A Haydn Festival is held here every September, paying tribute to this composer, who was born in Rohrau, some thirty kilometers away. You can visit the house where he lived. Admire the Baroque architecture of this peaceful city, accessible from Vienna by train or regular bus (1h20). The pedestrianized city center is a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
