PLAGUE COLUMN (PESTSAÜLE)

The plague column in the heart of Vienna's pedestrian precinct (Graben) is well known. There are many such columns in Austria, particularly in Vienna and the surrounding region. The votive plague column in Eisenstadt, erected like its cousins in the surrounding area to thank God for freeing the city from the plague, dates from 1713. From its pedestal, itself adorned with numerous sculptures, it rises its tall column with its twisting vegetation that adorns its summit sculptures.
