North of Burgenland, on the shores of the large lake named Neusiedl am See, is the economic, cultural and tourism centre of the national park area. In April 1996, Neusiedl am See celebrated the seventieth anniversary of its accession to the city level. A city marked by the history of its proximity to the Hungarian border and which has in fact almost eight centuries of existence. As a garrison city from 1856, she had a predominantly military career when about 15% of her population lived in the barracks. Installation of a ballatore opened the industrial age for Neusiedl, just like the publication of a first weekly, Neusiedler Wochenschrift awakened her to cultural life. However, today it is still a rural city, stimulated by its tourist possibilities, that it owes in particular to its lake.
