The village is dominated by the Burgfelsen (castle cliff) on which a citadel was built in the 14th century. The Esterházy family, who became owners of the county in the 17th century, made this citadel their main residence because of its advantageous position. Forchtenstein Castle, the ancestral home of the Esterházy princes, one of the largest families in the Austrian Empire, is a must-see when visiting the region.
