The Pustertal high-altitude road follows the sunny side of the upper Pustertal valley, through alpine pastures and small villages, a popular route for bikers and cyclists. At the end of the road, those heading west soon reach the entrance to the Villgratental valley and the imposing Heinfels castle, the symbol of the upper Pustertal valley near Sillian. This fortress with its pointed turret, former residence of the Counts of Görz, was built in the 16thcentury . Transformed into a garrison by Maximilian I during the Venetian wars, it was besieged during the peasant revolts of 1562.
