A small Alpine paradise, Kartitsch has a population of 800. This high-altitude village, perched at 1,356 m in the Gailtal valley, in the heart of the Dolomites of the Carnic Alps, is popular with mountaineers and hikers alike, and provides a pleasant base from which to hike to the surrounding peaks. Here you'll meet both top-level climbers and beginners who can enjoy themselves and train on the marked approach paths to the more technical routes. A number of inns and gourmet restaurants offer the chance to recharge your batteries before setting off again to conquer the mountains. In winter: small ski resort and ice cave.
