St. Martin is a sleepy provincial town that poorly reveals its past glory as Slovakia's political and literary capital. The town's small center is not of major tourist interest, although its convenient geographical position, between the Veľká Fatra and Malá Fatra, can make it an interesting stop for skiing or exploring the surrounding area. If you prefer livelier cities, especially at night, it is better to stay in Žilina. The town has a rich history: it was here that the Memorandum of the Slovak Nation was drafted, which demanded Slovak national rights that had been ignored in the Hungarian kingdom, and that the Maticá Slovenská, an assembly dedicated to the protection of Slovak culture, was established.
