The village of Strečno is located on the border between the Turiec and Žilina valleys on the left bank of the Váh River. The village, whose inhabitants were engaged in agriculture, woodworking for rafts and fishing, is known today for the remains of its 14th-century castle. It is located on a rocky outcrop and offers a beautiful view of the Strečno Pass and the Domašín meander. In recent history, on August 30, 1944, escaped French soldiers helped Slovak resistance fighters. Today, a monument honors these partisans who fought the German army in the Strečno Gorge.
