The place takes its name from the many willows that grow in the area. It belonged to France, was ceded to the Dauphiné in 1343, and later came under the power of the Savoy in 1713. As you walk through the town, you will notice several ancient fountains. Don't miss the beautiful church of Saint-Jean-Baptiste (1532). Sauze is the birthplace of Italian skiing, introduced by Swiss engineer Adolfo Kind in 1896, and during the 2006 Olympic Games, the freestyle competitions were held here. The slopes of Sauze are renowned for the eccentricity of the skiers who challenge the cold winter temperatures, torches in hand, dressed in an original way.
