Situated at an altitude of 500 metres, at the foot of high mountains, Susa offers the comfort of a lively town, with easy access to the surrounding natural sites. To visit Susa is to travel back in time. Once an important Roman town, Susa has preserved significant remains from this period, such as the amphitheatre, the aqueduct and the Arch of Augustus. After the Barbarian invasions and the liberation of the town from the Saracens by King Ardouin le Glabre, his granddaughter Adélaïde married the Count of Savoy, who thus extended his possessions south of the Alps. The town, known as the "Gateway to Italy", became an important stopover on the way to and from France. Today, Susa's old town has the typical charm of an Italian town, with its old quarters, covered passageways and painted walls. It's a great place to take a stroll and discover historic sites, from the Roman amphitheatre to the 11th-century cathedral. the "capital" of the Olympic valleys, superb mountains surround the valley, in the center of which stands the Rocciamelone, over 3,500 meters high.Festivities. In mid-July, over a long weekend, the Tournoi des Six bourgs is held here, with a torchlight parade and medieval show, not forgetting the palio on the last day in the streets of the town. At the very beginning of September, a folk festival takes place, with groups in costumes from all over the world parading through the streets.
