From the 15th century, under the Manfredi lordship, the city experienced a long period of prosperity. The Manfredis launched a vast urban planning program that gave Faenza its current appearance, with four main streets converging on a central square embellished with porticoes. All around are beautiful palaces and the 15th century cathedral. A dynamic city, Faenza is known as the home of ceramics, so much so that the word "faience", derived from the name of the city and designating a glazed terracotta, spread throughout Europe in the 16th century. Even today, the city has many workshops and an international museum of ceramics.
