Imola is the first town in Romagna that you come across when you leave Bologna along the Via Emilia, 40 km away (20 minutes by train). Today it is a discreet and prosperous town, but in the past Imola played an important role in the history of central Italy. Great personalities of Renaissance Italy left their mark on the city: Caterina Sforza, Cesare Borgia, Leonardo da Vinci... Today, its small historical center is guarded by the Rocca Sforzesca. Imola is also known worldwide for its automobile circuit, the Autodromo Dino e Enzo Ferrari, which hosted the San Marino Automobile Grand Prix until 2006. It was there that in 1994 the driver Ayrton Senna was killed in a tragic accident.
