This medieval village is one of the most beautiful in Italy. Its origins date back to the end of the 13th century, when Maghinardo Pagani, condottiere of the medieval Romagna (mentioned by Dante in The Divine Comedy), built a fortified tower on a hill, around which the town developed. Superbly preserved, it extends at the foot of three rocky gables on which stand its monuments: the Rocca, the sanctuary of Monticino and the Torre dell'Orologio. In the village, the Via degli Asini (donkey street) was a defensive bastion from which the soldiers repelled the invaders, before being walked by the donkeys going to the nearby gypsum quarries.
