Inishmore is the largest of the Aran Islands, with around 800 inhabitants and an area 14 km long and 3 km wide. Inishmore, or Inis Mór - "mór" meaning "big" in Gaelic - is also the easiest to reach and therefore the most visited. Kilronan is the island's most important village. This is where the boats arrive and where you can hire bikes to explore the island. Without doubt, the most impressive monument to be seen on the Aran Islands is on Inishmore: Dun Aengus, an ancient stone fort which is one of the country's most impressive archaeological sites. You can also see the remains of two other forts between Kilronan and Dún Aengus: Dún Eochla (circular fort) and Dún Dúchathair (on the edge of a cliff). You can also visit the remains of a monastic settlement (Tighlagh Eany) in Kilronan, as well as St Benan's Church which, at the top of a hill facing Inishman and measuring 3.20 metres by 2.10 metres on the ground, is probably one of the smallest oratories in the world. Finally, to the north of the island, past Kilmurvey, are Clochán na Carraige, an ancient stone hut, and the Seven Churches (Na Seacht d'Teampeall), which are in fact the ruins of two churches and monastic buildings. In 2022, the film The Banshees of Inisherin, starring Colin Farrell and Brendan Gleeson, is set mainly on the island of Inishmore.
