Kylemore Abbey is one of Connemara's major tourist attractions. Built in the 1870s by Mitchell Henry for his wife, who fell under the spell of this enchanting landscape on their honeymoon. Set on a hillside on the shores of Lough Pollacappull, the abbey was bought by the Benedictine community in 1920, who founded an international school for girls (closed in 2010). Today, it can be visited, with all proceeds going towards the upkeep of the building. An absolutely charming, bucolic getaway that's a must-do if you're ever in the area.
