Kylemore Abbey is one of Connemara's major tourist attractions. It was built in the 1870s by Mitchell Henry for his wife who fell in love with this enchanting landscape during their honeymoon.
This hillside abbey, on the edge of Lough Pollacappull, was bought in 1920 by the Benedictine Community, which founded an international school for girls (closed in 2010). It can now be visited, with the funds going to the maintenance of the building.
