Lough Gur is above all a horseshoe-shaped lake. But the few lands that border it (and which took its name) constitute one of the most important archaeological sites in Ireland. The first human traces date back to around 3000 BC. The earliest inhabitants cultivated the land and lived peacefully, protected from attack by the hills. There is also the largest stone circle in the country, the Grange Stone Circle, but also a dolmen. Excavations have also unearthed Stone Age houses and the remains of at least three crannogs (artificial wooden islands).
