This village is famous for its beautiful all-wooden monastery complex, built in the 1990s. The 57-meter-high church tower is one of the tallest of its kind in Europe. A popular and much-visited place of pilgrimage, this vast monastery also features a museum (with icons and old books) and two workshops (weaving and icon painting). Bârsana is also home to a remarkable wooden church dating from 1720, one of UNESCO's world heritage sites. It belonged to an earlier monastery, closed in 1791 by the Austrians. Its interior frescoes are distinguished by their Baroque style.
