Rimouski, which means "dog house" or "moose land" in the native language, is the metropolis of the Lower St. Lawrence region, its administrative and cultural capital. On May 6, 1950, Rimouski experienced the greatest tragedy in its history when a terrible fire ravaged a third of the city's buildings and the bridges over the Rimouski River. Surprisingly, the fire caused no casualties or serious injuries. Today, Rimouski is a lively city, with the Rue de la Cathédrale and Rue Saint-Germain at its heart. There's also a lovely promenade along the river, and not far away, at the town's port, cruises leave for the Lower North Shore.
