Métis is a recent form of the spelling Mitis, a Mi'kmaq word whose meaning remains unclear. Some say it comes from the Mi'kmaq term Miti Sipo, which means "poplar river", while others suggest that mitis is a distortion of the word métioui or mitiwee used by the Mi'kmaq and Maliseet to designate a meeting place. In 1886, Lord Mount Stephen bought land at the confluence of the Mitis River and the St. Lawrence from the seigneur of Grand-Métis for fishing purposes. His niece, Elsie Meighen Reford, inherited the estate in 1918 and transformed it into gardens from 1926 to 1954. Thus were born the Jardins de Métis.
