Kisantu is also called Inkisi, after the eponymous river that flows through it. The town has a population of around 100,000. Some houses have retained their colonial style, with metal frames and small bricks. On a hill overlooking the city, you can admire the large Catholic mission built in 1893 and the imposing Romanesque cathedral dating from 1926, which can accommodate up to 4,000 worshippers. At the time, Kisantu was home to a large community of witchdoctors and voodoo, whom Catholic missionaries tried to "re-educate". Today, Kisantu is above all synonymous with the magnificent botanical garden.
