Still on the RN1, we pass Tumba and then Lukala, a small industrial town visible from afar with its smoking chimneys. It owes its fame to cement manufacturing. Today, CILU is owned by the Katangan company Malta Forrest and Heidelberg Cement. We pass by Kwilu-Ngongo, home to the Compagnie Sucrière du Bas-Congo. It produces cane sugar and, for some years now, a white rum that is highly regarded in Kin. Kimpese is located between Matadi and Mbanza-Ngungu, an hour from Kisantu. It's also possible to climb the Monts du Mayumbe, which stand out in the distance with their gentle curves.
