The Okapi fauna reserve occupies approximately 1/5 th of the Ituri forest in the northeast of the country. The Congo River basin, with its reserve and forest part, is one of the largest drainage systems in Africa. The wildlife reserve houses endangered species of primates and birds and about 5 000 Okapi (of the estimated 30 000) living in the wild. The reserve also has exceptional panoramic sites, including waterfalls on Ituri and Epulu. It is inhabited by traditional nomadic populations of Mbuti Pygmies and Efe hunters. Due to the serious unrest in that part of the country, the park was inscribed in 1997 on the List of World Heritage in danger.
