Travel Guide Nyamulagira

The Nyiragongo and Nyamulagira volcanoes are active volcanoes. Located between 3 and 4 000 m above sea level, they offer a stunning show on the huge pots in fusion (see box). Eruptions of these volcanoes occur on average every 20/25 years. The last one took place in 2002. It made 4 victims (the looters of a gas pump that exploded) but big material damage, since a large part of the city and the airport were covered, sometimes up to the second floor of the buildings. The inhabitants of the East and Goma are the reputation of being particularly bold and courageous, quickly engaged in the excavation process and began rebuilding several neighbourhoods with hotels and homes.
